David Poyer's cycle of modern Navy tales ranks among the finest nautical fiction of our time. With China Sea, his self-doubting protagonist Daniel V. Lenson faces for the first time the unforgiving challenge of command at sea.

Ordered to relieve an alcoholic skipper, Dan finds he has inherited a damaged ship, an untrustworthy crew, and an ambiguous mission. He is to take the USS Oliver C. Gaddis, soon to become the PNS Tughril, on her final voyage to be donated to Pakistan. But in Kirachi, Dan gets new orders take Gaddis still further east, and operate against modern pirates preying on commercial shipping in the remote, dangerous South China Sea.

Pursuing an elusive and shadowy foe into an exotic, isolated world of hazardous reefs and tropical islands, Dan gradually discerns a larger purpose behind his supposed objective. Who are these "pirates?" What expansionist cunning supports them? Abandoned by the Navy, threatened by a mutinous crew, a murderous shipmate, and an approaching typhoon, Gaddis struggles to survive without crossing the shadow-line herself.

Filled with suspense, battle, and unforgettable descriptions of the sea's beauty and violence, China Sea continues Dan Lenson's star-crossed career in what Booklist calls, "One of the outstanding bodies of nautical fiction during the last half-century."

China Sea A Thriller Dan Lenson Novels Book 6 edition by David Poyer Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

This is an odd story in the series. For reasons that I will not go into here, the protagonist, Dan Lenson, finds himself captaining a ship outside of the ordinary US naval chain-of-command. The men are on the brink of mutiny, and Lenson's ship is faced with fighting state-sponsored piracy in the South China Sea. Although this one is set 20 years ago the theme of the story is relevant today, as China makes a grab for control of this strategic international waterway. Lenson is beset with just about every problem a sea captain can have in this pretty exciting story. I enjoyed this one thoroughly. RJB.

Joseph Conrad meets Tom Clancy- with a murder mystery thrown in for good measure. Poyer creates a great atmosphere here- the loneliness of command is highlighted.
I was on 2 FF 1052 class ships; 1074 & 1094. Good ships
I love everything Poyer has written - twice. This is a fabulous series.
not as good as the previous books
I have come to think of Dan Lenson as a personal friend and have become interested in his future. One small note. The command seat in aircraft is the left seat. For choppers it is the right.
Like a B action movie, there's a lot of mindless action and shooting and bad guys, but after a while you just keep reading because you want to get it over with. Poyer writes compelling books with his Dan Lenson series but this one strains credulity. He's got several outlandish plots going on at once, none of them very realistic, and toward the end, the book descends into silliness. This isn't one of Poyer's better books.
Poyer knows the Navy, it's people and equipment. He also knows the ocean and can present it's power, how impersonal, implacable, and relentless it can be. The book is a story but the events seem discussion of reality. If you enjoy a hero, hard times, and tales of the sea, you will be happily rewarded if you stick your nose into this book. Just be sure you have no appointments in front of you to disturb the read.
